Our partnership with Newcastle University
Hello! My name is Tennille and I’m an Occupational Therapist. I work at the University of Newcastle Occupational Therapy Clinic. In this role I am lucky enough to spend one day per week with children and educators at the beautiful Salamander Early Education. The partnership between SCCC and the UoN OT Clinic strives to help kids achieve their potential, be the best they can be and achieve inclusion for everyone at S.E.E.
We strive for inclusion by completing screening assessments, offering group/individual therapy and upskilling educators. Caregiver education is another way we aim to further enable children at S.E.E. The OT team have also completed a review of the physical environment and learning curriculum to identify ways that inclusion can be achieved.
Occupational therapy can often be an unfamiliar term. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages to enable them to participate in activities that they want or need to do. Occupation is a fancy way to describe “the things that are meaningful and take up our time”. For adults, occupations may include cooking, crocheting, or bushwalking. For children, their primary occupation is PLAY! This means that we will often use play to achieve goals. We aim to support children develop their independence. Common goals that a child may work on in occupational therapy include:
